Over the past 16 years, the Uvalde High School Alumni Association has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to 78 college-bound Uvalde High School students.
This year’s recipients were awarded $2,000 and include UHS seniors Delicia Campos who is headed to the University of Texas at San Antonio; Shyann Dockal, Texas Tech University; Kathleen Espinoza, UTSA; and Steven Martinez, Texas A&M University.
The UHSAA scholarships are made possible through donations from former Uvalde High School students, including graduates of classes as far back as 1950.
“We have been able to do this because the past alumni of UHS have donated each year to our fundraiser,” said Deyanira Salazar, recording secretary for the association.
Joining Salazar on the UHSAA board is president Gladué Tafolla who is a member of the UHS class of 1966; treasurer Kay Jungerman, class of 1965; corresponding secretary Carmen Iruegas, class of 1955; and board member John Flores.
Every spring the association mails out fundraising solicitations to all its members, a group Salazar said has decreased over time.
“We are actively asking our younger population to step up and become members of our association so that we can continue to increase the number of scholarships we give out each year,” Salazar said, highlighting the membership cost of $20.
“…If you think about it, we can all spend $20 easily on take-out food with only one order,” Salazar said, “but, think of how much $20 can help a graduating senior if 100 people donate $20…”
She said the impact on the student’s lives is what makes being part of the association worthwhile.
“A little, when combined with other donors, can make a huge difference for a student who needs financial help upon graduating,” Salazar said.
Award recipients are chosen through an application process held annually that includes a 250-word essay about future goals and unusual circumstances.
To become a member of the association, email Salazar at deyanira_math@hotmail.com. To make a donation, checks should be sent to UHS Alumni Association, P.O. Box 757, Uvalde, Texas 78802.
