In an effort to bolster community pride, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District athletic department is hosting a “Rep the U” Facebook challenge.
The contest encourages students and community members to document themselves demonstrating Uvalde pride while celebrating summer break, by posting pictures and videos on Facebook.
Anne Marie Espinoza, executive director of communications and marketing for UCISD, said the district is hosting the contest to expand its brand.
“This contest is a way for us to show everyone what Uvalde has to offer,” said Espinoza.
She also said that the challenge is another way to showcase Uvalde students who are participating in leadership opportunities this summer.
R. T. Gonzales, athletic director for UCISD, said the challenge is designed to bring out the coyote pride, and create a sense of pride and belonging for students, and “Rep the U.”
The challenge launched earlier this month, and thus far travelers participating in the contest have logged 9,722 miles, in 14 different destinations.
To participate in the contest, students, staff, alumni and Uvalde lovers are asked to photograph or video themselves showing their school pride by wearing maroon and white, Coyote or Lobo gear; by chanting; or by posing with Coyote and Lobo posters while on summer travels.
Once the pride-filled photo or video has been captured, participants should tag the Facebook page of UCISD athletic director R. T. Gonzales.
A description that includes the location, and names of the individuals in the photo is also required to be submitted into the contest. The pictures are then used on the website Travellerspoint to show where Uvalde is being represented.
Gonzales said the department is awarding first, second, and third place prizes to those demonstrating the most Uvalde pride.
The district will evaluate submissions internally and decide the winners.
First-place winners will receive $250 worth of Uvalde or Lobo merchandise, a pair of reserved seats and four sideline passes to a game of their choice, five Coyote cards, one autographed team football, and one “Rep the U” flag.
Second-place winners will receive $175 worth of Coyote or Lobo merchandise, a pair of general admission tickets and four sideline passes for a game of their choice, four Coyote cards, and one “Rep the U” flag.
Third-place winners will receive $125 worth of Coyote or Lobo merchandise, two Coyote cards, and one “Rep the U” flag.
The deadline to enter the contest is Aug. 16. For more information, contact Gonzales at 830-591-4991.
