UCISD families eligible for $285 per child for food

All families with children 5 to 21 years old who attended Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District during the 2019-20 school year are eligible to apply for a one-time payment of $285 per child through the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer program, which is designed to help families purchase the food they need.

According to Texas Health and Human Services, families with children attending a school where all students receive free or reduced-price meals, which includes Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District,  are eligible for the benefit.

Since the 2017-18 school year, the district has participated in the Community Eligibility Provision program, which allows every student enrolled at UCISD to enjoy free breakfast and lunch.

The benefit program is administered through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Texas Department of Agriculture and the Texas Education Agency. It is being offered because of school closures from COVID-19.

Texas received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide more than $1 billion in benefits, which apply even if the student’s school district is still providing free meals.

To apply, visit yourtexasbenefits.com/Learn/PEBT. The application period is open until June 30.

The program also applies to families with children ages 5 to 18 years old who received SNAP food benefits for the month of March 2020, and those with children up to 21 years old who are certified for free or reduced-price school meals.

Those receiving SNAP benefits in March do not need to apply for the benefit as it was to be loaded onto the existing SNAP card in May.

For others, once eligibility is verified, families will receive a Texas P-EBT card in the mail preloaded with funds for every qualifying child.
