El Progreso Memorial Library’s Artist of the Month is Uvalde native Elaine Schlichting, who will set up her gallery of pencil drawings, watercolors and oil paintings on Aug. 3.

The lifelong artist said she first found her love for art at her home, as she always had paper and pencils.

“I’ve been drawing since forever. I’ve always loved art,” she said. “I like it because it gives me a chance to create a new world. When I create something, I give people a view into what I see. It’s also special because, when I draw or paint, I give something life.”

Schlichting, who is a  biology senior at Sul Ross State University, said she will always pursue art – even if she can’t make a career out of it.
