Kothmann skated in 1956 Winter Olympics

Team USA’s 2018 Winter Olympics figure skating lineup has been announced after the completion of the U.S. National Finals last weekend in San Jose, California.

I am not an Olympic Winter Games enthusiast, nor did I watch the figure skating last weekend. Flipping TV channels, though, I saw a young American pair on ice and it brought back a memory.

A Texan on ice in the Winter Olympics is a rare sight indeed, but you can read about it in the Feb. 13, 1972, edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

C.A. “Sully”  Kothmann of San Antonio teamed with Mary Ash, from Colorado, and the figure skating pair finished seventh in the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy. They earned a place in the Olympics by finishing second in the U.S. championships that year and sixth in the world championships.

Sully was the brother of Riley “Boots” Kothmann of Uvalde. My memory brought me back to the 1972 article, which was written while Sully lived in Uvalde. His Los Angeles restaurant business went down a canyon embankment during a 1971 earthquake.
