Popular events are free to children 3-16 years old as well as military veterans and senior citizens.
Two separate fishing derbies are scheduled next month at the Uvalde National Fish Hatchery, with the first for children and the second geared toward military veterans as well as senior citizens.
Both events are free to attend. They will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. All anglers will need to bring their own bait, tackle, and cooler for keeping fish. Live bait is prohibited, as are pets except in the case of service animals.
The June 3 children’s event, which experienced record-breaking turnout last year with nearly 600 children in attendance, will utilize two 1-acre ponds.
Children 3 to 16 years old will be allowed to keep five fish. The ponds will be stocked with fish weighing 1 to 2 pounds each.
Children must be supervised by an adult.
The same suggestions and rules apply for the June 17 veterans/senior citizens event, and participants will also be allowed to keep five fish.
The fish hatchery is located 2 miles south of Uvalde on Farm-to-Market 481. For the day of the event, employees recommend arriving early and using the south entrance on 481.
