Fairy godmother project aims to collect 300 dresses

Donations may be dropped off at First Baptist Church in Uvalde through tomorrow

On-campus stylists, fitting rooms and seamstresses might not be a reality for Uvalde High School’s prom night, but locals can make a difference for teen girls without a formal gown by donating to a joint closet created by UHS and First Baptist Church of Uvalde.

With a goal of 300 dresses to be collected by tomorrow, Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District hopes the fairy godmother project will ensure every UHS teen has access to formal wear.

The idea came from vice principal Florinda Cardenas, who previously taught at a New York high school where a similar project was hosted annually.

“They had stylists, fitting rooms and a seamstress,” said Cardenas, who served as a stylist.

So far, the program has collected 50 dresses, which are being held at the First Baptist Church in Uvalde, 220 N. High St.

Gently-used gowns may be dropped off at Uvalde High School, 1 Coyote Trail, Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. or at the church Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Cardenas said she is taking references from counselors and putting up flyers around school in hopes of spreading the word.

“The majority of our community is working class, so whatever we can do to help out [is the goal],” Cardenas said.

Cardenas requests that donated dresses follow the district’s dress code, including no bare midriffs, plunging necklines or strapless gowns.

Prom dress selection date is set Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
